CC BEREA is blessed by good contacts with brothers and sisters abroad. One example was the practical help of an international team of 9 brothers from Germany and USA. It was led by two men: Roland Kühn from the local church at Jakobstrasse in Leipzig and Craig Borgard from USA who is living in Germany and is involved in planting a new church in Schkeuditz. Both of them are experienced in building churches and organising mission trips like this one.
The team arrived in Slovakia on April 19 and after a short stop in Raca they reached Modra.
Work
The first work was performed at the premises of TWR. They are in a process of reconstruction and they offered Berea their used stone pavement. It just had to be taken to pieces and transported to Modra - Harmonia.
The rest of work in following days could be summarised with just one word: digging. First digging deep in front of the main entrance where new foundations were laid for the new extended foyer. Than digging in the basement – we intend to create a youth club or a comfortable lounge here. And finally (to give them a little rest :) some more digging in the courtyard for the electric cables.
Food and leisure
It became quickly obvious to our guests that food is a substantial part of Slovak culture (and that the women in Modra are excellent cooks). They admitted that they were not used to eat ten times a day at home and that after coming home they will have to slim down a little...
Besides the work there were some excursions for our guests to discover Slovak towns and countryside. They visited the centre of Bratislava...
... and the surroundings of Modra and the castle Cerveny Kamen and also the ceramics factory in Modra.
Spiritual ministry
Calling this work trip „mission“ is not just a coincidence. We used the fact that English language is still attractive and we have visited some high schools in Pezinok and Modra. The students of the English class could learn about our guests, their country, customs and experiences. As a follow-up after these visits some students took part in our picnic or visited the local church.
The ministry in Christian Assemblies had a good response, too. The evangelistic meetings in the churches in Raca, Modra and Nitra gave us the opportunity to get to know our guests better. We learned about planting the new church in Leipzig - not just about erecting a building but about reaching people through service responding to their needs. The brothers leading the team stated that mission is a permanent task and that it includes serving in new areas. That's why they are serving also in Hungary and Romania. If you would like to join a team it is certainly possible and the experience is worth the effort.
A team of workers from the USA intends to visit Modra in the end of August. We are glad and hope for a good and profitable time.
